Suunto Core Watch
Although quite adept at electronic gadgets, it took me some time to peruse the online manual and become familiar with its capabilities. Once competent regarding its functionality, it took no time to utilize as a true navigation and information collector.
Appearance: Simplicity governs this multi-function watch without the thrills. I tested the all black Suunto Core which can come in a number of colors that fits your fancy. The interface and backlight allowed ease of viewing for quick access to data. The backlight provided just enough light to display the information without over illuminating.
Quality/Durability: This award-winning watch collects a significant amount of data for your backcountry voyage. During many trips, it was a reliable accompaniment helping assure the correct direction, indicating future storm systems based on its barometric pressure reading, and providing accurate altitude readings when properly calibrated. The focal point of technology for th
is watch was the compass function. The ability to adjust declination between magnetic north and true north was an impressive feat and necessary tool. The rotating bezel is able to set on a fixed point/direction and provide directional arrows when deviating away from intended target. For times when whiteouts occur or it is difficult to find a fixed point in the distance, this came in quite needed.
The altimeter with log memory of ascent and descent during climbs is quite beneficial for mountaineering trips. When your fellow traveler/ spouse/ whiney kid asks “how much longer,” you can accurately let them know. The barometric reading on the Suunto correctly
identified an approaching storm which sent off an alarm to allude the incoming inclement weather.. Although not used, there are options to plug in the sunset and sunset times worldwide dependent location.
As per the digital thermometer, this was a point of contention. Although it is quite cool to know exactly how cold it is outside when your feet and fingers can’t function properly and the candle and body heat has not warmed the snow cave yet, the time it took off your wrist to the accurate temperature was not impressive. When it’s cold, it’s cold and 5 degrees versus 10 doesn’t exactly change your plans.
Price: $329
Recommendations: Strengthen the band as it was a concern during field-testing that it could break.
